New Surgical Gel Glows Pink to Reveal Infections

Reference- www.myfoxphoenix.com

Summary- The molecules turn pink whenever they are in the presence of bacteria. These molecules were created by researchers at the University of Sheffield in northern England. When applied to a wound the gel can also kill 80% of bacteria. This newly developed gel will help doctors detect and assess infections quickly using ultraviolet light. It still takes several days to determine the level of bacteria. According to scientists the new glow gel could reduce the detection of bacterial infection to a few hours of less. Apparently these molecules were engineered to recognize and attach to bacteria, collapsing around them as they do so, creating a fluorescent glow detectable using a hand held UV lamp.

Critique- I think that personally that this is amazing. What scientist have the ability to do with molecules and stuff like that astounds me. This kind of seems sereal with what they have done with molecules and bacteria.

Impact- This will help the medical field. Like the article says, it will help doctor and nurses. They will be able to identify that the bacteria is there sooner. They will also be able to determine how much bateria is present sooner.
