Bald Eagle Taken Off Endangered Species List

Summary: Over the past 40 years, our Bald Eagle population went from 400 – 10,000! It was taken off of the Endangered Species list this year. In 2007 – four years ago – it was officially put on the Endangered Species list, although their population had been going down steadily for years. Animal rights activists demanded that it be brought back up and we began to try different tactics of bringing it back up.
Critique: The eagle is the country’s national bird. It was right to put it on the Endangered Species list, because we had to do something to raise the number of these birds. Eagles are mostly found scattered throughout North America in the wild, though many are in captivity.
Impact: This is a great thing to hear about, because having something go extinct is depressing. Think about what might change if it actually did go extinct. America may have to change its national animal because how would it look if we had an extinct bird as our symbol?
