Heavy Drinking May Leave You Tipsy for Years

Summary: Researchers at Neurobehavioral Research Inc., in Honolulu compared people that have been heavy drinkers sober for an average of seven weeks and people that have been heavy drinkers sober for seven years and people that have never been dependent on alcohol. They compared all of these people by balance ability and their manner of walking. Each person had a three part test much like a sober test taken for DUI’s. Out of 200 people the people that have been sober for 7-15 weeks did the worst. When asked to do the test with their eyes closed the 82 long sober people did much worse than those who have never been dependent on alcohol. Researchers say that there is an 80 to 90% chance that heavy drinkers recover but there are still residual effects.

Critique: It’s oblivious that it’s about time this test has been done. People can’t honestly expect to have no side effects to their years of reckless drinking. Everything comes with an effect, because if you drink a lot you get drunk. Now people know that even if you drink and then swear to become sober it follows you there are always consequences for your actions. Everything is good in moderation, it comes back to that too much of a good thing can kill you. If you are underage you shouldn’t be drinking anyways so if you follow the law you don’t even have to think about this tell your 21. Bottom line is to think before you drink.

Impact: This research impacts our lives more than we could ever know because we think that this couldn’t affect us at all but it does. Talk of the short term effects of drinking someone drinks someone gets drunk and someone has a hangover. What that someone doesn’t know is that he or she is not only hurting themselves but others, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 10,839 people died from alcohol impaired driving crashes in 2009. Now the long terms effects are shown in this research. Alcohol can crush dreams, for all those little girls who wanted to be ballerinas who in their adult years drank now can’t have that dream because of loss of balance. Or that little boy that wanted to be a fireman who was killed in a car crash. When anyone drinks they should start to think about not only themselves but the others who are affected by this.
