Excess Weight Adds Risk to Diabetes

Reference: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/09/110906102606

Summary: Research shows that more and more Americans are obese causing an increase in their risk of diabetes. According to study lead author Joyce Lee, M.D., M.P.H., the relationship between weight and type 2 diabetes is similar to the relationship between smoking and the risk of lung cancer. Obesity is a popular contributor to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, and disability. A BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. Children's BMI increases with age, and if they are obese, they are more likely to become obese adults.

Critique: More and more Americans are becoming obese, and I think that they should try to at least lose weight. The obesity rate gets higher everyday, along with the rate for people with diabetes.

Impact: As more people become obese, more people get diabetes. More people are likely to get sent to the hospital, and more Americans are getting unhealthy.
