Too Much Undeserved Self-Praise Can Lead to Depression

Summary: The American Psychological Association has researched and found a problem with self-praise. People that try to boost their self confidence by telling themselves they are doing great when they really aren't can leave them feeling depressed and dejected instead of accomplished. In this specific study, researchers explored many groups of young people to test this theory. These groups were college undergraduates, female young adults around the age of 19, high school students from Hong Kong, and female high school students. Their research proved that no matter what age or ethnic background, this was proved true.

Critique: It's ok to be honest with yourself. If you are not doing the best you can, admit it and step it up. If you are trying your best, give yourself credit for it and make sure you are giving 100 percent. Don't be too hard on yourself. You are responsible for your own actions.

Impact: This could help young people see the importance of honesty. If you can't be honest with yourself, how can you be honest to others? It's ok to be happy when you accomplish something, but we have to be ok with the fact that we are not perfect and we need to be pushed sometimes. We don't have to beat ourselves up that we are not doing something perfectly. Just try your best.
