a quiet push for agroforestry

reference:

summery:
some farmers are starting to use trees to help produce more food, reduce greenhouse gases and clean runoff water from farms. for example the Floras in Helena, Mont. planted more than 300 different kinds of trees, from apple to chestnut under the native pine and spruce trees. beneath the trees are many different crops: shrubs like buffalo berries and raspberries, edible flowers like day lilies, and plants used in medicines like yarrow and Arnica. turkeys and chickens roam the 2 acre plot eating berries and leaving manure to fertilize the soil. studies show that in agroforestry farms like this properly placed trees can filter 95% of the soil sediment and 80% of the nitrogen and phosphate.

critique:
by using traditional farming methods you slowly take all the nutrients from the soil. by using agroforestry the trees return nutrients back to the soil when leaves fall of and decompose
impact:
using agroforestry can reduce the pollution in the air and in the runoff water
