Genomic Sequence and Comparison of Two Macaques Reveal New Insights into Biomedical Research

Summary: The South China Center for Innovative Pharmaceuticals, Sun Yat-Sen University, and BGI, the largest genomic organization in the world, along with several other organizations in the United States, China, and the United Kingdom, completed the genome sequence and comparison of the Chinese rhesus macaque and cynomolgus. This study was published today. This study is a landmark in macaque genome research, understanding genetic differences in macaque monkeys, human disease research, and drug discovery. Scientists hop that this research will make the effective use of non-human primate models in medical research easier. Macaques are used a lot for biomedical research, and many doors have been opened due to the unlocking of their DNA.

Critique: I think that this is really cool. I don't support animal testing in cosmetics, but I do in medicine. Hopefully this will lead to new vaccines for humans and pharmaceutical drug development.

Impact: I don't think that there is going to be a gigantic immediate impact. However, I believe that this is going to help the human race by scientists being able to develop new vaccines and test new pharmaceutical drugs.
