Female Spiders Change Mating Preference When Hungry

Summary: The basic gist of this article is that although female spiders still like male spiders, they tend to prefer bigger ones if they’re hungry. Well-fed female spiders show less aggression. They do not like, no matter the circumstances, small males with small leg tufts. (?!) The aggression is always directed toward males of this caliber, and it’s possibly because if she gets a large male mad, she may get eaten. Also big spiders are less likely to be eaten, unless the female is huge and extremely hungry. This creates more large male spiders to breed with females who prefer these other small males, who usually die on their own. So, one day, we will most likely have bigger spiders than today because of natural selection, and trying to find a mate. If only human guys understood this . . . .

Critique: I hate spiders, so I don’t really know much about them in general. I mean, if I came across one in my house, the only coherent thought I would be able to form would be “DADDY THERE’S A SPIDER, COME KILL IT”. I am the last person who would say “Ah, look at this fine Schizocosa Ocreata! This is a rather big one, about 1.745 inches long. I wonder if I can get it to bite me so I can keep the venom in a vial and possibly sell it on E-Bay . . .” Uh, no. Just no.

Impact: Maybe it’s just me, but I think a lot of people are like this. I know I am. Everyone who knows anything about me knows that you do NOT bother me when I’m hungry. Not unless you want to suffer the insufferable wrath of a very irritated and possibly monstrous me.
