How the Zebra got its Stripes

Summary:
We’ve always wondered why the zebra was black and white and whether they were black with white stripes or white with black stripes. Some people think they’re black and white for camouflage, but doesn’t black and white stand out most in the plains? Well, a team of scientists think they have the answer to why zebras are black and white.

Impact:
Horseflies are nasty huge flies that carry disease and deliver a painful bite. (I would know.) Teams of scientist think that the zebra’s have evolved black and white so that they wouldn’t attract the horse flies. Apparently these flies are attracted to dark colors, and with the white stripes in a zebra, it is less likely for a female to come to a zebra and lay her eggs or have a snack.

Critique:
I’ve always thought that zebras were black and white so they could blend in together and look big and scary to predators.

  1. Wow! I always wanted to know why they looked like that. That actually doesn't seem as amazing as i thought the answer to that quetion would be however. I have to say that after years of wondering that im kinda dissapointed that they are like that to protect them from flies but i guess nature knows what its doing. I guess protecting themselves from flies is more exciting than "they were painted that way".
