Are your friends making you overeat?

Reference: http://news.health.com/2012/02/01/friends-making-you-overeat/

Summary: A new research suggests that people sitting at a table with us have a "subtle yet powerful" influence on our eating habits which in some cases causes us to overeat. Researchers say that their previous findings show that people adjust their food intake to match the ones of their eating companions, and sometimes tend to eat more with others than eating alone. Some say this demonstrates the power of social influence over food intake.

Critique: I think it just depends on like if you're with your friends you tend to eat like a pig, but when you're with people you don't know that well or if you're eating alone, then you don't really eat that much.

Impact: I don't think there is much of an impact, unless you make really bad food choices around certain people.

  1. Hi Moira-

I think that if your friends are eating 10 pounds of food around you, you are more inclined to eat more as well. On the other hand, if your friend eats nothing, you feel inclined to eat less as well, whatever reason that may be. I think it's mostly because you feel bad if your eating like a pig and your friend isn't eating anything, or it makes you feel weird that your friend is eating like a pig and you aren't.

If you are eating alone or with friends, you tend to eat as you feel if you're alone as apposed to with friends. If you're alone you can eat as you wish or however much you feel like eating. I definately think it's a social aspect.
