Access to unhealthy snacks at school unchanged

Reference: http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/06/access-to-unhealthy-snacks-at-school-unchanged/?hpt=he_c2

Summary: A study began in 2006 to help prevent the access of unhealthy snacks to children and adolescents in school. Based on the results on a survey taken in 2009, about half of all elementary school students had access to unhealthy snacks. By vending machines, snack bars or stores, these students could get any unhealthy snack they wanted. One of the women involved in this study was upset to receive these results. Lindsey Turner had this to say: "Given increasing attention in recent years to the problem of childhood obesity, we would have hoped to see decreases in the availability of junk food in schools over time." According to statistics in 2008, 17% of kids ages 2 to 19 are considered obese.

Critique: I can understand why Lindsey Turner was disappointed in these results. Childhood obesity has been a growing problem in the U.S. I can also see it from the child's perspective though. I'm not sure if people should be too happy to find out that snack bars and vending machines being taken away from them.

Impact: This article might make kids think twice about what they are eating. Of course, we are kids and love junk food every once in a while, but sometimes it can be too much.
