New Hope for Patients with Brain Tumors

Reference: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/02/120203141105.htm

Summary: Before this year, Patients with glioblastoma multiforme (the most common and most aggressive type of brain tumor)had 3 choices of treatments; surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Recently there has been a new method call the Tumor Treating Fields (TTF). This procedure delivers electrodes directly on the skin above the tumor which prevents cells from dividing and causes cancer cells to die. Among testing the procedure, it has proven to be just as effective as chemotherapy but has fewer side effects and has been proven to give a better quality of life.

Critique: This article puts a big smile on my face as well as (i'm sure) many others. It makes me glad to think that scientists are making a difference in patients lives to improve their health and happiness. I think this procedure seems to be very reliant and can change a hopeless life into a hopeful one.

Impact: I would assume that many patients that have glioblastoma multiforme would be jumping for joy about this new discovery. This treatment has fewer side effects and a better quality of life than chemotherapy. It seems as if everyone would use this procedure!
