Summary: Many people
who have symptoms of depression hide it from their doctors because they think
that their emotional difficulties are off-topic, they’re afraid that a record
of their conversations will be seen by employers, and they don’t want to be
prescribed anti-depressants. These results highlight the need to educate
patients, doctors, and nurses about the importance of discussing mood problems
during appointments and checkups.
Critique: I can kind of
understand why people would hide their symptoms from their doctors. They might
think that their emotional difficulties aren’t as important as their physical
health. At the same time, I think that they should be honest and open with their
doctor about their symptoms so that they can get help before it gets worse.
Impact: Many people who
aren’t seeking any treatment or help from doctors about their depression
symptoms seem more likely to have thoughts of suicide. It might be really serious,
and the patient doesn’t even know that they need a lot of help from their
doctor.
