Summary: A study from Cleveland Clinic states that modern day helmets may work as well as leather helmets from “way back when”. This test consisted of dummies wearing modern day helmets and older leather helmets in collision simulations using the same speed and force as would be applied with a man to man collision on the field. Through the results scientist now know that leather helmets in most tests performed same as modern day helmets and in some test even better than modern day helmets.

Critique: People say “don’t try to fix what isn’t broke” well maybe we should have listened to them as far as helmets are concerned. If the leather helmets provide more protection than modern day helmets than I say we seriously consider the choices of helmets we have made so far. Yes, modern helmets are “cooler” but when it comes to the choice of concussion or no concussion I would absolutely choose the safer helmet over the better looking one.

Impact: I believe this study absolutely has an impact on our lives. Students who play football should be well protected on the field and even those in NFL. If not only for the safety of the player then for the safety of the fantasy football players because I’m sure they cannot afford to lose points for a player out on concussion circumstances.
