Summary: Not really. Mars, close enough. There were no people on this rocket, just a rover. It is expected to come back in the foreseeable future with information on Mars’ climate, soil, etc.
Critique: I think this is a waste of money. It’s outer space. I mean really, what do we expect to find? We’ve got all of these fancy telescopes and what-not, so what do we need to go up there for? I think America has always had stubbornness issues, like we always have to be the first country to do anything and be the best at it. This, along with the fact that Obama just can’t seem to say no to anybody has made money tight here in the U.S. It’s like “Hey, we’re the United States of America! We’re in two wars and a couple trillion dollars in debt – give or take a few billion. All of this plus our illegal immigration problems and our totally not stable economy makes our country pretty out of shape, but hey, we were the first ones to land on the moon! And now we’re going to Mars using money we don’t have!” And this is why other countries hate us. They’re forced to respect us, but they hate us. I think that after this, we should stop wasting money on outer space. It’s big, and unexplored, and impossible to navigate. We figured that out 50 years ago. So let’s get over it already.
Impact: This is the first rover to be sent up to Mars. It is expected to come back virtually unharmed. I guess it’s a good thing because if there is something valuable in the soil that we would otherwise have never known about, we can obtain it and sell it. And when I say ‘we’ I mean America, naturally. (NASA almost never gets the credit it deserves. Other countries say ‘Wow, America did that?’ not ‘Wow, NASA did that?’)
