Heart Disease Treatment: A New Stent Design May Put Patients at Risk
Summary:
According to the Journal of Interventional Cardiology, some of the stents are used to keep blood vessels open that treat heart disease are poorly designed to resist shortening. The article states that some of these stents are able to become deformed which could result in danger for a patient. Coronary stents are scaffolds placed in arteries that supply blood to the heart mainly to help those with heart disease. Manufactures have been working to make them with new materials and create more progressive designs. The shortness and deformity of the stents can cause severe complications, which would result in a stent being clotted and the patient having a heart attack.
Critique & Impact:
I think that it is a good thing that ScienceDaily posted this article because it informs us of what could be happening to those that we know with these risks. I think it has such a strong impact on people mainly because when patients use the stents and if they are deformed or not working correctly it can result ultimately in death.
