Surprising Sunken Islands Discovered Near Australia
Summary:
During a recent sea voyage researchers found two sunken islands in the Indian Ocean west of the Australian city of Perth. The researchers think they were once part of the ancient continent of Gondwana. The information that we now have could affect how we understand the way in which India, Australia, and Antarctica broke off from Gondwana. The two sunken islands were charted during the expedition of having flat tops, which informs us that they were in fact once at sea level. Also the rocks that were retrieved suggest that the islands weren’t always underwater. They are still unaware of how long ago they were above water but they think about 130 million years. They will continue to study the rocks found until they can make an accurate and final announcement.
Critique & Impact:
I think it interesting how we continue to find more and more on the Earth. It continues to add pieces to this huge jigsaw puzzle called Earth that we have. It continues to show us and point us in the direction of how the continents once laid.
