Tuna and Mackerel Populations Have Reduced by 60% in the Last Century

Summary:  On February 8, 2012, scientists in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists have concluded that Tuna and mackerel populations have decreased by 60% in the whole world. This subject however, has been debated over for the past 50 years. The fish that have been most affected are the Cold Water Tuna and the Atlantic and Southern Bluefin that have decreased populations of 80% and are highest in economic value. Others have been researching these reducing in populations. In 2003, someone in Nature Journal explained how Pelagic Fish or Tuna, have reduced by 90% in population in the past century. Debating how to fix these problems, people have been saying that reducing trade and hauls of the latest expensive fish would help the populations.

Impact: The reduction of fish populations is a big deal. For millions of years or even billions, people and animals have been eating and surviving off fish. If these fish die out, its most likely other fish, animals, even water levels will die down. Today, some countries have kept a stable economy from trading fish. This will definitely affect trade and so many countries’ economies and even could cause wars for fish that would then be high in value and considered a delicacy.

Critique: I hate fish with a passion and never ever will eat it. If fish go extinct, I will not cry or starve in any way unless it caused other rescourses to die off. But I guess I would because now little boys cant go fishing with their daddies anymore and bond in manly ways much anymore. Also now there would be less sandwich varieties which would definitely freak people out but not me!! Haha. If certain popular fish went totally extinct, I wonder if people would start eating their pet goldfish?

  1. That's sad that all the fish have swam away. if there a decease in only one population then it can effect the entire ecosystem. if all fish die it can feed the bigger fish so then they die, and then it can't feed the even bigger fish.

So you see Pdiddy we need all the fish sea. without them there would be ecosystem collapse, leading to ocean being fish less. then what would Japan eat? plus I like Sushi, so save the fish!

  2. Great blog! ;) And no need to hate fish! If they weren't on the planet, we wouldn't have so many other populations of species! Like you, I think that this is because the dramatic decrease in these fish populations can and will be affecting the whole food chain in the natural environment.

I believe that Cold Water Tuna and the Atlantic and Southern Blue fin have decreased 80% because of global warming, especially because of their environmental aspects today. I agree that trade and economy can be affected also in countries that depend highly on the profit of fish. Vital vitamins and minerals only found in fish could also become very rare and affect the human population as well. Anything to help these populations grow and thrive should be done now!
