Cancer Drug Shows Promise For Alzheimer's

Reference- www.myfoxphoenix.com

Summary- This new cancer drug dramatically and rapidly improved the social abilities and mental function and restored the sense of smell to mice that were bred with a form of Alzheimer's disease. This new research suggests a new way for people with the disease to handle it. The build up of a protein fragment called amyloid-beta, is what it associated with and causes Alzheimer's disease. The skin cancer drug bexarotene cleared the protein in the brains of the Alzheimer's stricken mice within days.

Critique- This is kind of interesting because they are using a drug that is used for skin cancer for a type of disease that is associated with the brain. This seems a little out of the ordinary to me, but they do some crazy things with cancer. I wonder if it will have any affect on human brains just because they are probably 10x bigger than that of a mouse's brain.

Impact- If this new drug proves to work on human brains than this may be the new cure for those that have Alzheimer's disease. Which is amazing because it will be a relief to the people and the families of the people that have this disease.
