Brain Stimulation Provides a Memory Boost

Reference- www.myfoxphoenix.com

Summary- An electronic brain-stimulation technique used to treat Parkinson's disease and chronic pain seems to enhance human memory as well, according to tiny but interesting new study that bolsters hope for one day developing a nondrug treatment for those with memory problems. This new study focused on seven patients with severe epilepsy whose memory abilities ranged from severely impaired to normal. They all recieved deep brain stimulation, in which electrodes were implanted through a hole in the skull, in order to detect the source of their seizures. This gave the scientists a chance to stimulate different regions of the brain and observe changes in memory. No matter how little the improvement, all of the participants saw and noticed an improvement in their memory.

Critique- I did not know that people with epilepsy had memory difficulties. But now that I know that they do, this will help them tremendously, or atleast the people that want to try this treatment.

Imapct- This will imapct the people that have memory problems and want to improve on it. I wonder if this would help patients with Alzheimer's disease at all...
