Study of Freakish Mystery Illness Finds No Cause

Summary: The symptoms: feeling like little bugs are crawling on you, fatigue, you have oozing sores and mysterious fibers sprouting from your skin. Scary? A few years ago government doctors were getting up to 20 calls a day from people saying that they were having these symptoms. Many of these people lived in California, and Dianne Feinstein, one of the state's U.S. senators, asked for a scientific study. Federal health officials began to study people saying that they had this condition (dubbed Morgellons) in 2008. The study cost around $600,000 and today doctors released its long-awaited results. The results conclude that... Morgellons exists only in the patients' minds. No infectious or environmental cause was found. Skin lesions were common, but doctors concluded that they were from scratching. The fibers were cotton and nylon, mainly, not an organism wriggling out from a patient's body. Some doctors are pleased with the diagnosis that Morgellons is in the mind, while at least one person, Randy Wymore, an Oklahoma State University pharmacologist , has concluded that Morgellons is not a psychiatric disorder.

Critique: It was a very interesting study and hopefully it was accurate. Morgellons sounds really scary so hopefully there isn't a small percentage that actually does have it while the others may just be having delusions.

Impact: Hopefully now people who think they have Morgellons will seek psychiatric help.
