Melatonin Receptor Gene linked to Diabetes

Summary: Mutations in the Melatonin Receptor Gene have been said to severely increase your chances of getting Type 2 Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes is characterized by having an excess of blood glucose, and having an extreme lack or resistance of insulin. Most people who have Type 2 Diabetes have to inject themselves with insulin 3-4 times a day. It is the most common form of Diabetes and has affected over 300 million people in the world. Due to the obesity rate of the world, it has been predicted there will be 2 times more people who have Type 2 Diabetes by next year.

Impact: This study could lead to new ways to prevent or treat Diabetes.

Critique: I was very interested in this article because my step-dad has Diabetes.
