New Gene Study of ADHD Points to Defects in Brain Signaling Pathways

Summary: Researchers studying genetic influences in ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) have found changes in specific genes that take part in vital brain signaling pathways. This study raises the chances of a new treatment option being developed for those with ADHD who have those changes in their genes. At least 10 percent of ADHD patients in the study had those changes in their genes. Now there is a genetic explanation for the link that applies to a subset of children with ADHD.

Critique: I really hope that scientists will be able to find a new treatment option for everyone out there with ADHD. It's amazing that they were able to pinpoint specific genes.

Impact: Half a million children in the United States have ADHD. Anything that can change the lives of half a million children and their families has a gigantic impact.
