Artificial Spider Silk from Transgenic Silkworms

Summary: The universities of Notre Dame, Wyoming, and Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc. have accomplished a magnificent feat. They have successfully made transgenic silkworms that can spin artificial spider silk. Natural spider silks have higher tensile strength and elasticity than normal silkworms. The imitation spider silk has very similar characteristics to the real thing. Until now scientists have only been able to make small quantities of imitation spider silk with no commercially feasible way to produce and spin the artificial silk.

Critique: This is incredible because they have genetically engineered silkworms to produce imitation spider silk. There are many uses for the silk, especially in the medical industry. I think that this could be the next big thing for the textile industry. I can see Nike, Reebok, and Under Armour picking it up and making new athletic clothes.

Impact: The scientists have found a way to bring spider silk to the mass market. It can be used in the medical field for suturing. When made into bandages, its fibers will heal wounds faster than normal bandages. The silk may also be used as natural scaffolds for tendon and ligament repair or replacement. It can be made into super strong fabrics, maybe even stronger than Kevlar. There is talk of making it into bulletproof vests, athletic clothing, and a new generation of airbags for cars.
