The Tongue’s Taste-buds

Summary: The tongue is actually pretty cool once you get past the fact that it’s pretty dirty overall and is a bit of a pain if you bite it accidentally. The little bumps on your tongue are called the papillae. The average person has about 10,000 taste-buds and they are replaced every two weeks. This is why you may like fried chicken now but will find it repulsive two weeks later. Also, even though it may feel like you’re being burned from the inside out when you eat something really spicy, your tongue sort of gets confused for a split second about what flavor it is.

Impact: No impact, just think about where we would be without taste-buds. My sister – or maybe it was me? - Actually did a science experiment on how the nose contributes to tasting something. Try this the next time you’re bored and you’re eating: plug your nose and see what you taste. It will both taste like nothing and feel really weird in your mouth or it will taste weird in general. If you start choking, don’t be surprised.

Critique: I love to eat. Like, no joke. So when I taste something good, it’s hard for me to savor it because all I want to do is to eat more.
