Accidental harvesting of marine mammal species

Accidental harvesting of marine mammal species

Reference- http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/01/120124151945.htm

Summary- In a recent study, people from 114 different countries have consumed one or more of 87 marine mammal species since 1990. This has caused a major threat to many dolphins, seals, whales, and porpoises worldwide. Also, a marine mammal that is on the verge of extinction, the polar bear, is part of the list. Most of these animals are being caught as a by-catch, stuck in nets, and eventually being utilized as food in poverty struck areas.

Impact- Due to this dilemma, teams such as the Wildlife Conservation Society have stepped up and began working with local communities to create a local conservation association made up of fishermen to protect these animals and set out a for watch for whales and dolphins.

Critique- This issue of accidental harvesting of marine mammals should begin and continue to be  monitored, especially in the more isolate parts of the world. Saving a few dolphins could save their whole species for the next generation.
