Statins May Reduce Risk of Dying From Flu

Reference-http:// abcnews.go.com

Summary- Researchers found that Statins may rduce the risk of death for patients who have been hospitalized for influeza. The Researchers from the Oregon Public Health Division analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Conntrol and Prevention's Emerging Infections Program. The results came from more than 3,000 adults patients who were hospitalized with influenza between 2007 and 2008. One- third of the patients were already on statins or given stating while in the hospitals. Researchers adjusted for confounding factors, including age, race and heart and lung disease, they found that patients who did not take statins were twice as likely to die from influenze than those who received statins. Flu treatments are limited to antiviral and immunization medications, but researchers said statins might be one more thing that could treat the virus that affects about 10% of the U.S. population each flu season.

Critique- I had no idea that the flu was so deadly. I've heard of it before, but I didn't realize that it affects 10% of our population each flu season. I don't know when flu season is but thats a lot of people if you think about it. And for researchers to find a medication that may help cure these affected people is remarkable.

Impact- This impacts all the people that have been affected with influenza. This also impacts people in the medical world, because they may have found something that could help these people.
