Research Finds Childhood Obesity is Best Tackled in Schools

Summary: Australian researchers looked at 55 interventions in older studies and found that programs at school were vital in getting kids to have healthy weights. For skeptics, there was little evidence that the programs would have a negative impact on the way the children say themselves. Children's health would be improved with lessons about healthy eating, physical activity, improving school lunches, making the students more active during the day, and supporting parents to make similar changes at home. The problem in getting these programs is funding.

Critique: I think that schools need to have more of these programs. I saw what went into school lunches on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution and it really shocked me. If they changed that I think that it would make a big difference along with teaching kids about being more healthy. I think that teachers need to emphasize making healthy choices with everything in moderation. Kids shouldn't faint when they see a hamburger and fries. Also, there are many students who suffer from anorexia and bulimia who need to be helped. Anorexia and bulimia can be just as dangerous as obesity. Hopefully through these programs the schools will cut obesity, as well as anorexia and bulimia.

Impact: Hopefully this will cause people to realize that schools need to change and put a larger emphasis on students' health.
