Opioids Erase Memory Traces of Pain
Summary: This new study shows that opoiods not only temporarily relieve pain, nut that the right dose cam actually make you forget the pain in the spinal chord and therefore eliminate a key cause of chronic pain. Scientists created a surgical procedure in which the pain fibres were stimulated under controlled conditions. The effects of opioids (morphine like substances) is based on their ability to bind on nerve cells which process pain-related information. As soon as the medicine is stopped the pain-relieving will stop. They relieve pain effectively but its cause cannot be eliminated.
Critique: I have only been on morphine once or twice because I was in the hospital and it did do a good job of taking away pain. What I didn't know is that it could actually help your body forget you ever had the pain.
Impact: This is a great way for nurses and doctors to help their patients in the hospitals when people are in extreme pain. America just needs to have a paradigm shift in pain therapy.
