snakes in arizona

Snakes in Arizona

Snakes in Arizona are going to change the ecosystem. Every year the number of snakes in

Arizona increases. This affects the ecosystem because snakes eat rodent’s small birds and can

kill even larger animals. Snakes alone are decreasing the smaller animal population and even

larger predators. The majority of desert predators eat these smaller animals as well. This will

decrease the food for the ecosystem causing the predators to leave as well.

Positives and negatives

Some positives are a reduced amount of predators, less predator attacks on humans and pets.

Some negatives less birds in the area result in a increased amount of bugs.

Dehydration and youth sports: Curb the risk

Summary: Dehydration is a very big risk for our young youth. Adults adapt better than children in hot, humid weather.  Most of our youth get dehydrated by sports.  Any child is vulnerable to dehydration in certain environments, but some can be more vulnerable if he or she: rarely exercising, being overweight, is sick, taking curtain medications or supplements such as cold medicine, and had heat related illness previously.  In the first few days of practice, heat related problems can start to happen.  The coaches should encourage our children to make sure that the children wear light weight or loose fitting clothing.  The coach should tell the children to stay hydrated wherever and whatever they are doing.  Coaches should also stop practices and games if it’s too hot or humid.  Coaches encourage parents to teach their kids the signs of being dehydrated.  Here are some of the signs: thirsty, dizziness, dry or sticky mouth, headaches, and cramps are symptoms of being dehydrated.  If your child has these symptoms during practice, he or she needs to go tell the coach right away.

Critique: This article is right about dehydration.  I play sports and have gotten dehydrated before.  I've actually experienced some of these symptoms.  I would get a dry throat and would get really thirsty and at times felt dizzy.  I always try and drink fluids constantly throughout the day and make sure that during my breaks I am drinking water.  I think it is important for us to be informed of dehydration because it can be very harmful.

Impact: This article can help show our young ones to stay dehydrated.  This also shows that if you don’t stay hydrated you can get heat stroke and other stuff.  If parents want to keep their children safe when there playing sports, they should read this article.

Tiger in "love triangle" kills mate at Texas zoo

Reference- http://news.yahoo.com/tiger-love-triangle-kills-mate-texas-zoo-222652586.html

Summary- EL PASO, Texas a female tiger has killed her mate at Western Texas zoo. Authorities say a rare attack that came after a couple of months of a jealousy in a feline love triangle. A three year old tiger Malayan tiger Seri kills six year old Wzui at about 4 p.m. on Thursday in an enclosure at the zoo. As soon as the incident was reported zookeepers closed the tiger exhibit and the veterinary staff were called. They examined Wzui and found that he was dead.

Critique- I think it was normal for the tiger to kill one and other just because of jealousy like other animals do. If you look at other news you will see that other animals have killed other animals just because of jealousy.

Impact- I think the impact on this could be telling the zoo’s to be care full where you place your animals. Also that you should watch the animals behavior closely to make sure nothing like this happens again. Also so you can do something before this happens again.

Magnetic Field Device May Zap Away Migraines

Reference: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/PainManagement/story?id=5255108&page=1

Summary: People that have regular migraines might have a way besides medicines to cure them. A transcranial magnetic stimulation device, about the size of a blow-dryer. This device sends magnetic fields through the brain that could cut short the pain signals. In this study they found 201 patients that suffer from migraine with aura. Migraine with aura is a migraine that 20 to 30% of people struggle with. They gave half of these patients the real stimulating device and the other half a device of the same appearance without the stimulation. This study found that 39% of the people using the real device had no pain two hours after using this device compared with 22% of the people using the fake one.

Critique: I myself think it’s a waste of time….On the other hand I don’t get migraines so maybe I’m not the best person to ask. I never had one but they sound like they hurt and I think this could be a really good thing for those who do get them. I think they should look into this further and do whatever they must to perfect this device.

Impact: I think this could make a huge impact on the people and hospitals of today. A way to cure something that so often occurs without medicine, this could save money. This could also lead to bigger and better inventions in field of magnets. Who knows magnets could someday lead to the cure of cancer. I say we pursue the affects of magnets on the brain and find more ways to fix more problems with this knowledge.

Pima County Confirms 3 West Nile Cases

Summary- In the part week Pima County health officials say that they have confirmed at least 3 cases of West Nile Virus in the past week with other possible cases still under investigation. This virus can be transmitted to animals and humans through the bite of a mosquito that has previously bitten an infected bird. The Symptoms of West Nile Virus usually start 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and may include headache, fever, fatigue, body aches, a skin rash or swelling of the lymph nodes. Most people that are infected with this virus never experience any symptoms or have a mild illness that goes away on its own, is what the Health officials claim.
Critique- I never knew that a sick, infected bird could give a tiny mosquito the power to infect whatever it bites next. It's definately going to make me a lot more cautious about mosquitoes. But considering that we don't have a lot of them in the dusty, dry areas of Arizona I'm not as concerned. It makes me wonder how they treat something like this.
Impact- People may become more aware and conscience of mosquitoes, and when they get bitten by one. So they might start to where a lot more bug spray, which in turn would make the bug spray sales go up.

Daily Alcoholic Drink Good for Middle-Aged Women, Study Finds

Resource-www.myfoxphoenix.com
Summary- US Scientists say that middle-aged women that enjoy an alcoholic drink every day may live longer. The researchers at Harvard School of Public Health found that women over 50 that consume a single acoholic drink five to seven days a week are more likely to have good health in when they get older, compared to women that are non-drinkers or those who have more than two drinks daily. 14,000 female nurses since 1976 found that those who consumed two alcoholic drinks every day were 28% more likely to improve the odds of "successful ageing", while this increased to 50% for those who enjoyed only ONE alcoholic drink daily.
Critique- I think that is a very good study. I've always been told that alcohol is bad for you and that I should never even consider it when I turn 21. But with this study says is that is a women drinks 1 alcoholic beverage a day she will live longer. I find that hard to believe, due to the fact that I only know maybe four women that drink very day. The scientist didn't say what kind of alcohol is better or worse, or how big the drink should be. There is a lot of loose ends, and questions that they didn't answer.
Impact- More women might start to drink every day, and if they get addicted they could become alcoholics. Alcoholic women may think that now they have a good reason to keep drinking. alcohol sales may go up, even bar sales may go up.

The Human Heart

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart

Summary: The human heart is responsible for pumping blood through our blood vessels. The average heart will beat about 72 times a minute. It can weigh from 250 to 300 grams in females and 300 to 350 grams in males. It is basically a tube that pumps fluid (such as fats, sugars, and proteins) that contains water and nutrients.

Critique: I think that the heart is probably the most important organ keeping us alive.

Impact: the impact it has on humans is a very good one because it helps us survive.

The Human Brain

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_human_brain

Summary: The human brain is the center of our nervous system. Like other mammals, our brain has the same general structure, but is over three times the size of a mammal that is as large as us. Over the last 28,000 years, the human brain has been shrinking.

Critique: The brain is a very important organ. It is probably the second most important organ.

Impact: The impact it has on humans is a very good one because it is one of the many things needed to survive.

Salt could make you stupid

Salt could make you stupid

Reference- http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/salt-could-make-you-stupid-says-research-2536187/

Summary- A new study says you should eat less salt and exercise more to keep your brain active and so you can be smarter. Also it says that you should eat lest salt so you can keep your brain motivated and so your brain can function better. If you love salty food but don’t love to exercise you should do more exercising. Most of the food you eat has way more salt than you think.

Critique- I think you shouldn’t have that much salt because if you have too much salt that makes you fat. Also salt isn’t even good for you any how cause if you eat too much salt you will have a high blood pressure and it is bad to have to high of a blood pressure.

Impact- The impact is that salt isn’t good for you anyhow. Salt can affect your body anyhow so this should make people think twice before eating salt or even more salt than they should for now on.

Cell Destuction

Blog 3
Reference: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/233133.php
Summary: It would appear we've come up with yet another reason that the human race just needs to sit down and enjoy the sunset. Scientists have shown studies that stress can play a part in damaging cells. To actually see if this could even be true, they took mice and combined them with an adrenaline-like compound that affects the beta adrenergic receptor. Robert J. Lefkowitz claims that, "This could give us a plausible explanation of how chronic stress may lead to a variety of human conditions and disorders, which range from merely cosmetic, like graying hair, to life-threatening disorders like malignancies," Lefkowitz said. It can cause greying of the hair and shorten your life.
Critique: I think that this is pretty believeable, considering that overly stressed people don't have as much pleasure in life and don't really know how to enjoy the small things. But then again, science changes all the time, new theories appear that disprove old ones, so perhaps this is untrue. Still, this is an interesting statement, that makes sense and is still being studied.
Impact: This could coerce people to maybe just relax and lighten up and enjoy life and perhaps even make life a little bit better. Of course, if you really believe that this destroys the cells.

Easing Pain

Blog 2
Reference: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/233932.php
Summary: Looks like we found a new way to ease pain, Chondroitin Sulphate, reduces pain levels. In fact it is being used on patients who have osteoarthiritis, and a test was done by having two sets of patients, one, getting 800mg of chlondroitin sulfate, and the other having a placebo effect. Over a course of a few days, those with the sulfate, showed considerably less pain than those with the placebo effect.
Critique: Maybe there gonna start using this more often for people with arthiritis.
Impact: This can make people with osteoarthiritis life much easier than it was before and can give them more hand movement and less pain.

Medical Requirements

Blog 1
Reference: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/233949.php
Summary: It would appear that becoming a certified in the medical department may have to do with more than just ambition. From what this article is saying, it has somewhat to do with, race, ethnicity, what age you graduated, and your debt. A test was run to see how many medical student actually became certified, 87.3% out of 42,440 did. That would mean only 37,054 got certified! Older medical student who withdrew or were dismissed from there medical education, had a lower chance of becoming certified.
Critique: I geuss that this would make sense that it may be even fair. Choosing to certify someone based on race and age is really not how I would do it, I would base it more on how skilled they were in that field.
Impact: This could maybe make people angry for being unfair and not giving everyone a fully fair chance.

Affects of the Past
Radio activity is a big issue in today’s society. From when we first discovered the harmful affects of radiology and nuclear weapons, we have learned that radioactivity affects our biology just has much has it affects the planet. Birth defects, cancer, and death are just some of the outcomes of radiology.
When a person is exposed to radiology our bodies react has if we have been microwaved. Our DNA gets all mixed up and our cells mutate giving us cancer and unborn children are born with birth defects because of the radiation preventing the baby from growing properly. Radiation can stick around for many years and can hide in our DNA undetected for quite sometime.
Some places have adapted to radiology such has the islands that were hit fifty years ago, even today its unsafe to live on those islands because of such high radioactivity. However the plants there are just fine living with radiology. Radiology is used in many medicines and modern technology have radiology in them such has chemo therapy to get rid of cancer and cell phones use radiology in them to.

26 most disturbing kids movies

Reference:http://www.babble.com/kid/child-development/kid-movies-disturbing-films-family/?page=29

Summary: A article on the most creepy kids movies, including The neverending story, Narnia, The Wizard Of Oz, E.T. and more. Explains why your kids shouldn't watch them.

Critique: Okay, I watched about half of these movies as a kid and I never got phased. These people are just way too up tight, I mean cmon how is The Neverending Story "scary"? that was one of my favorite movies as a kid! In the article it even said CareBears : The Movie was scary. Maybe a little creepy but not scary. Sheesh. It's not like their watching "Chuckie" or "Insidious".

Impact: Maybe some new parents will read this and not let their kids watch these classics. I hope not!!!

Intoxicated Moose gets stuck in a tree!

Reference: http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/09/08/sweden.drunken.moose/index.html?hpt=hp_c2

Summary: Well first of all it was really funny!!! But basically this moose ate some apples, but they were fermented so this moose got drunk from the apples. And then he got stuck in a tree! Hahaha!!!! The fire department had to come and get it down from this tree, and then they left it there!!!

Critique: I would say mooses (What's the plural for moose? Is it "Mooses" or "Meese"?) should not eat apples that make them drunk, 'cause then they will get stuck in a tree.

Impact: I wonder if i'll ever find a moose stuck in the tree in my yard??? Look out for intoxicated mooses (or is it meese?)

Dust Bunnies!

Written By: Samantha Bernickus
Resource: http://www.macroevolution.net/dust-bunnies.html

Summary: Dust bunnies are everywhere, they are in our rooms, houses, just everywhere! My question is, where do they come from? Arizona State Enviormentalist have the answere, which is that dust bunnies mostly come from outside. Two scientists said that dust is a potpourri and comes from mostly dead skin from pets and humans, fiber from carpets and furniture, and stuff that flies into your house. This dust can also be harmful to children that possibly suck on or lick dusty toys and make them recieve harmful toxins into their body. So just a note to people would be to make sure the stuff you touch or put in your mouth is clean. They also found that over 60% of houses were found that their dust bunnies were formed outside and came into the house.

Critique: This article was interesting to read and good information, because you now know that you always have to be cautious of what you put in your mouth or touch, you may get very sick.

Impact: The impact this article has is that hopefully people will keep their houses more clean and cautious so that they do not get sick.

Japanese tsunami debris will reach US

We have all heard about the devastating tsunami that hit Japan in March. Lives were lost and some survivors were left without a home. Researchers at the University of Hawaii have been studying the effects of this tsunami and have stated that the debris is going to be washed up on American shores. Jon Hafner, from the International Pacific Research Center said that the first wave of debris should hit Hawaii’s Midway island in about a year. He also said that the remnants of the earthquake that hit Japan could hit our west coast. He thinks that the debris could hit the entire western shore, from Alaska down to Baja, California. Hafner states that it is hard to tell what the debris will carry or if it is toxic or not."The main cloud of the debris would turn to the southwest and end up in the Pacific Garbage Patch, and within five years it will be coming out of the garbage patch once in a while and hit Hawaii over and over and over," says Hafner. He seems to think that the waves will be very large and hard for the microorganisms to break down. "But we do not know for sure if that is the case," says Hafner.

Why The Trip Home Seems To Go By Faster

Written By: Samantha Bernickus
Why The Trip Home Semms To Go By Faster
Resource: http://www.npr.org/2011/09/05/140159009/why-the-trip-home-seems-to-go-by-faster

Summary: People seem to think that the ride back home is much shorter than the ride to where ever it was you were heading. Even astronaut Alan Bean said, “Returning from the moon seemed much shorter.” This theory has a perfect explanation to why we think this way and a physiologist from Tilburg University knows. He said that the reason why we think that the trip back home seems faster is because we are more familiar with the landmarks that we had already passed on the way there. “And that might help to increase the feeling of speed, of how fast you travel”, he says. Though he felt that this was not the right answer after he had gone on a plane. He thought it was shorter back but he couldn’t look out the window and recognize anything. So he tested this theory by making people ride their bikes to a fair, some would take the same way back and others would take a different way but the same length away. He found that it didn’t matter which way you went back it still felt like a shorter trip back then on the way there. His thought now was that people expect that on the way to any place it’s going to take longer than expected. So on their way back they already know what to expect there for it feels like the ride was shorter. There are also other reasons why that the trip back home seems shorter but it really is just an allusion.

Critique: This article was not very important but it was informational and helped me understand why I always thought that rides back home felt shorter.

Impact: This story doesn’t have impact on anything except the fact that its letting you know that thinking on your way back home is shorter, is just an illusion

Ancient burial may reveal home of biblical figure

Ancient burial may reveal home of
biblical figure

Reference- http://news.yahoo.com/ancient-burial-may-reveal-home-biblical-figure-201204372.html

Summary- Ancient burial box revealed three years ago, it contains a mysterious inscription that can reveal the home of the family of the figure Caiaphas. The burial box is also called a ossuary which was discovered in 1990 but the inscription was just recently verified as legitimate by Yuval Goren which is of Tel Aviv University and Boaz Zissu of Bar Ilan University. The box which is made of limestone is covered in decorative rosettes and has an inscription. What is special about the inscription is that the decreased is named in the full content of three generations.

Critique- I think it is amazing how they found this. Also how there is a inscription on the box. Which makes this look like there could be more artifacts than just this one out there. Also maybe one day from finding more artifacts people will be able to read the inscriptions better since they have already seen it, it could be like a new language they are learning.

Impact- They have found many different artifacts that help them understand more about how things are made and maybe how the world and religion came to be. This will also lead more people to wonder what else is out there. Just beside artifacts like if there is anything in value out there.

Shows Kids Living with Smokers Miss More School, U.S. Study

Reference: http://www.foxnews.com/health/2011/09/06/kids-living-with-smokers-miss-more-school-us-study-shows/#ixzz1XGugllSs

Summary: An U.S study shows that kids living in smoke free homes got to school more than kids living in smoking homes. Massachusetts general hospital conducted a yearly in-person survey for U.S households. This study shows that age 6-11 living with tobacco smoke in the home missed 1.06 days more than those in non smoking homes. One quarter to one third of these missed days were due to second hand smoke systems as ear infections and chest colds. One third of children age 3-11 live with at least one smoker in the home and half of those kids have been found with detectable levels of blood marker from being exposed to tobacco.

Critique: I think this study was very well needed in this society so many moms and dads are smoking today and so many kids are being affected by it. In my mind I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to quit. If they do want to quit but are so addicted they can’t this is there incentive. Don’t do it for your own health or to save money but do it for your kids. Many kids out there will be punished for something they didn’t do more than 600,000 people are killed from secondhand smoke in a year 40% of that 600,000 are children.

Impact: This is a major problem in the world today. This has a huge impact on the kids the adults and even the schools. These students are being stopped from getting the education they deserve all because of their parents. I hope this parents can see after this study how outstandingly selfish there are being taking something from there children that they rightfully deserve.

A Viral Sniff

A Viral Sniff

Summary: The nose is an easy way for things to enter and leave the body. It is also a way that common virus’s can get to the brain. A common virus is called human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6). This virus when inside can cause roseola, this is an infection causes a high fever and chest rash. This virus attacks nerve cells in the body, which carry information all over the body. This germ can also cause more serious sicknesses called encephalitis and epilepsy. Encephalitis is a swelling of the brain and epilepsy makes people have very serious seizures. Scientists have found that HHV-6 is being contained in the olfactory bulb, which is the part of the brain that controls information about smells. When you smell something the little molecules go into a small empty pocket behind your nose called the nasal cavity. After reaching the nasal cavity is when it goes to the olfactory bulb and the odors are signaled to other parts of the brain. This was also proven to enter through the nose because the virus was found in the mucus of the nose.

Critique: This article was written to help educate people about the fact the serious virus’s can be ingested through your nose, and can enter the brain. I was very educated even though it didn’t tell me the things that I should not smell in order to stay away from the virus.

Impact: This is just one of the ways that virus’s enter our bodies and scientists aren’t sure if this is the only way that these diseases can enter us. But they have conducted some experiments showing that it is possible. It gives scientists another thing to look at when studying different diseases and how they are consumed, and also how to cure them.

Study: Strange Fruit Burns Average 8.9 Pounds, 2 Inches in 28 Days

Reference:
http://www.healthdiscoveriesmag.com/

Summary: A study found that the African mango has caused Americans to lose an average of 8.9 pounds and 2 inches in 28 days. This fruit is known to be so effective, so safe and so inexpensive that Americans are eating it to lose weight. This mango shows to reduce LDL cholesterol and dangerous triglycerides. This mango is also only 62 cents per serving. Dr. Mehmet Oz likes this remedy and apparently agrees with it so much he mentioned it on his the Dr. Oz show. This mango is native to Cameroon’s west coast rainforest. Many people that have tried this so far have been experiencing miraculous weight loss.

Critique: I think that this might just be another scam. I mean how many weight loss programs have come out that introduce the exotic super fruit that solves all your problems. It seems like a miracle because finally there is something that taste good, is inexpensive, and I can be skinnier just by eating it. Everyone is looking for exactly that and that’s what the people who want to make money give them.

Impact: If this is sufficient than I think that is an amazing thing and could be used for a lot of good. I mean at least there are people looking into this and not just letting it pass by. I think it would be really cool to just be able to eat some fruit and lose weight but I don’t believe that’s how it works.

Being 'Stinky' is Not Your Fault

Reference- www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpps/news/being-stinky-is-not-your-faultdpgoh-200110906-bb_14879923

Summary-Scientist have suggested that our body odor is a factor in attraction and women can have physical and emotional reactions to the presence of their partner's body smell. If the only body odor you have makes people gag, not to worry. Researchers found that 11% of the population suffers from trimethylaminuria, a condition marked by chronic malodor, it has nothing to do with hygiene. A team of researchers from the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia authored the study. The researchers tested just over 350 people that sought help to deal with their odor. They found that, up to one third of these individuals had a rare genetic disease dubbed trimenthylaminuria, also known as TMAU. TMAU is a condition in which their bodies don't metabolize an enzyme found in some foods properly, and this causes them to give off an unpleasant fishy smell from their breath, sweat, urine, and saliva.

Critique- This is a sort of interesting article. I didn't know that there is a disease that caused some people to smell fishy and unpleasant. I wonder if its more men than women that have this disease.

Impact- Now that they found out why some people smell the way that they do, maybe they can find a cure or something to reverse it. This may help part of the population that don't have a reason for their odor, maybe this is what their reason is.

In The Dark, Cave Fish Follows Its Own Rhythm

Summary: The Somalian cave fish called the Phreatichthys Andruzzii has its own sense of rhythm and time. Its inner timekeeper has about a 47-hour cycle. This cycle works by food rather than sunlight. Scientists say this will teach them more about why clocks are important to living things and how they live when their cycles are no longer related to the movement of the sun. “Somalian cave fish have been cut off from the sun for up to 2.6 million years.” Because of this they fish’s eyes, scales, and also its skin coloring has disappeared. In lab tests the cave fish did not react to the 12 hour light and day cycle.

Critique: I thought that this was well written and it was understandable. It grabbed my attention just by the picture and the title.

Impact: This has an impact on the scientists work. They said that it will teach them more about living organisms and the way they clock are important to them and how they live a daily life when their cycle doesn’t have to do with the rising and setting of the sun.

Week 4 Blog: Willpower endures

Summary:

Here something cool! When you’re young your will power will stay with you all the way to adulthood! For example if you had a hard time resisting the chocolate chip cookies when you were young then 30 years later you would have just as hard time as the time you were young and wanting them good chocolate chip cookies. The scientists back in the 1960 did a test were 59, 4 year old students would sit in a room with only a marsh mellow. If they survived the 15 minutes they would get two instead of one. Half the students ate the marsh mellows. So then a couple weeks ago they called the same 59 students back to the marsh mellow experiment. The same people did the exact same thing 60 years ago. Now that was way to cool I had to share it!

Critique:

I think that if your will power stays with you until adulthood I would get rid of any bad habits that you would not have enough will power to stop.

Impact:

There really isn’t any impact for this certain topic. Maybe it will impact the way you think? I’m really unsure but soon someone will create a way to impact the world.

Preserving 4 Percent of the Ocean

RESOURCES:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/08/110829115431.htm

There are 129 species of mammals in the world and one fourth of them are at risk of extinction. This is very concerning because you need all the species in order for the ocean's ecosystem to work properly, they all rely on each other. To decide where they should conserve the marine life, researchers overlapped maps of the marine life and picked the areas with the most biodiversity. Studies showed that there were only twenty areas in the whole world with the largest amount of species. If we preserve just nine of the twenty areas we would save eighty four percent of all marine mammals, 108 in all. These sites make up only four percent of the worlds ocean including Baja California, eastern Canada, Peru, Argentina, northwestern Africa, South Africa, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. Other factors also played a role in the nine areas such as pollution, local climate disruption, and commercial shipping. About seventy percent of the areas show effects with high human impacts. If we don't do something now, the generations to come are going to do even more damage. What was also interesting is that the other eleven areas include species that can't be found anywhere else. That's why we need to preserve the sites now, not later. I wonder if one day our Earth will be a healthy planet again, or will it be so sick that no species would be able to survive, not even humans?

Caffeine Buzz May Be All in the Mind, UK Reasearchers Say

Reference- http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpps/health/caffeine-buzz-may-be-all-in-the-mind-researchers-say-dpgonc-20110902-fc_14834602

Summary- You know when you get that jittery feeling when you drink caffeinated coffee or any kind of drink? Well researchers at the University of East London say that it may be just a mental thing. There were 88 volunteers, their ages varied from 18-47. They drank at least 2 cups of coffee a day for the research. Those who consumed caffeinated drinks reacted slower than those who consumed a decaffeinated drink. "The findings suggest the expectation of having consumed caffeine confers an enhancement on sustained attention that is at least comparable, and perhaps superior to, the effects of caffeine," the researchers wrote in the journal Appetite.

Critique- I think that this is true mostly because if I'm tired and need to stay up late, I'll drink something with caffeine in it. But I never feel any different than I did before I ever drank the caffeine. I think its mostly mental, due to the fact that if you really believe in something then you trick your mind into believeing it too. It's like when you get a shot, and you think its going to hurt, but if you really believed that then yes it will hurt.

Impact- It may affect the way people think of caffeine. People may go from drinking Starbucks in the morning to drinking an energy drink, or a 5 hour energy thing. I don't know how it will affect us. Other than it may affect each individual person in its own way, and some people may not even care.

Physical Exercise

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_exercise

Summary: Exercise can be used for lots of things. For one, it can be used to lose weight, strengthen muscles, or even just for enjoyment. Frequent Exercise can boot your immune system and help prevent type 2 diabetes and obesity. It can improve mental health and self esteem.

Critique: I think that more people should exercise because it is good for them. It can also prevent depression, which means fewer deaths.

Impact: The impact that exercise has on the world is a good one because if more people exercise, there will be less obese people/children and a healthier more fit world.

Butterfly

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly

Summary: A butterfly flies around mostly during the day. Its life cycle consists of four parts: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Their wings are usually bright colored. Some will migrate long distances.

Critique: I like butterflies. I like their bright colored wings and that they can go into a cocoon and turn into a butterfly.

Impact: the impact they have the Earth can be both neutral and negative. It can be neutral because some butterflies don’t hurt the Earth or help it. They can be a negative impact though, because when they are in their larva stage, they can damage domestic crops or trees.

Tropical Coral Sunscreen

Resource:
http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-08-tropical-coral-sunscreens-human-scientists.html

Have you ever actually thought about what's in sunscreen? Well researchers at King's College London have discovered that coral actually produces natural sunscreen compounds to protect itself from the suns harmful UV rays. Now they think coral can be used to create another type of sunscreen for humans. Researchers have started to study how the compounds are processed and hope to synthetically re create them in order to create a revolutionary new sunscreen. Coral is an animal in which algae lives within it. Algae uses photosynthesis to create food for the coral while the corals waste is used for the photosynthesis. The coral lives in shallow water because the photosynthesis needs sunlight to work which makes the coral more vulnerable to sunburn. What is very interesting is that the fish that feed off of the coral also have developed a sunblock. Since the scientists see that it can be passed on, they think if they can re create it they could eventually make it into a tablet! Scientists are also wondering if they can re create the sunblock for plants so certain plants can grow in areas of the world where the sun is very strong. For example, we could grow vegetables in Africa to help feed the starving people. This could make a huge impact throughout world and in human society. This would also help prevent the effects of global warming.

The PANTHER Bio-Sensor

PANTHER: PAthogen Notification for THreatening Environmental Releases

Summary: Engineers have invented PANTHER, which is a biosensor that detects airborne pathogens like smallpox, tularemia, E. coli, and anthrax. It gets more exciting- PANTHER can detect and identify bacteria and viruses in less than three minutes! Old sensors took a minimum of twenty minutes just to detect pathogens. This allows people to take action much quicker, because everyone could be infected during those twenty minutes. It can be used in buildings, subways, and other public places. It's about a cubic foot and weighs 37 pounds. With adjustments, it could improve biological detection capabilities for emergency responders. It's also possible that the technology could be applied in medical diagnostics. People wouldn't have to wait for test results until the lab was done analyzing their sample. However, scientists really want to use it to prevent bioterrorism.

Critique: Bioterrorism is pretty scary. It's hard to fight something you can't see! This technology makes me feel more protected.

Impact: This will save lives if pathogens are ever employed by bioterrorists.

Warming streams could be the end for salmon

Summary:
Warming streams in California could be the end for Spring-run Chinook Salmon by the end of the century, say scientists at UC Davis, the Stockholm Environment Institute and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
In almost all scenarios, the fish died out because streams became too warm for the adults to survive the summer to spawn in the fall. The only thing that could preserve salmon populations for a few decades was to reduce the amount of diversions for hydropower generation at the warmest time of the year. Hydropower is often part of renewable energy portfolios designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Critique:
Scientists should figure out more of what to do to save all of these salmon in the streams. They could possibly move them from one stream to another once one is too hot or cold for them to be in. they could also control the temperatures in the stream to make them cool when they are hot.

Impact:
The impact of all of the salmon dying would be a big impact on food. If all of the salmon died in contaminated water we would no longer be able to eat the salmon. Salmon is a very popular fish to eat, and if not available that would be a big disappointment to many people.

Does Stress Help Us Succeed?

Worrying is a body’s natural defense reaction when faced with any sort of threat or fear. Pioneering research has found the “worry center” of the brain and revealed that it is an area of the brain that deals with survival and the judgment of threats and risks. In the same study, researchers looked at anxiety treatments. They have found that the medicine affected human defense reactions. "Feelings like worry and anxiety may be unpleasant, but it seems they are part of our defensive repertoire and help keep us safe and it is only when they become exaggerated do they represent an illness," says Dr Adam Perkins of King's College London. "Our ultimate aim is to improve the detection, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses, such as anxiety, where there are unusually strong and debilitating forms of worry."

Breakthrough Leukemia Treatment Destroys Tumors

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

Summary: Scientists have achieved what they have been researching for two decades. Using gene therapy, they have destroyed cancer tumors in three leukemia patients. Scientists genetically engineered the patients' own blood cells to annihilate the tumors. After the patients received the treatment, there was no change. Two weeks later they started having intense flu symptoms. About a year after the treatment, two of the patients are in remission and one has improved. However, scientists aren't sure how long the remission will last. They are now talking about spreading this treatment to other cancers such as pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, and brain cancer.

Critique: I think that this is absolutely amazing. This is very personal to me because I've had a few family members pass away from cancer. I believe it has the potential to be cancer's cure.

Impact: Every hour, about 150 people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Many lives can be saved using this therapy if it pans out. Individuals will be able to enjoy their lives and families won't be hurt.

Mediterranean Sea Invaded by alien species

Mediterranean sea invaded by alien species
Reference - http://www.biologynews.net/archives/2011/05/24/mediterranean_sea_invaded_by_alien_species.html

More than 900 alien species have been encountered around the mediterranean sea.
"The Mediterranean is the world's most invaded sea, but our understanding of how alien species affect ecosystems is inhibited by a lack of basic knowledge of the animal and plant communities on the coast. Once species have become established in the Mediterranean it is almost impossible to eradicate them," Stefan Kalogirou said.

The poisonous pufferfish is one of the most recent alien species found. The toxins they release can lead to respitory arrest, which can be fatal. One scientist said, there needs to be more knowledge of these alien species and their risksto the human population.

Impact: If people don't know about it then they could be poisoned by the alien species.
Critique: I think this article is cool. It knowledges people on the alien species so people can be safe.

Attractive Dads Have More Grandchildren, Zebra Finch Study Shows

Written By: Samantha Bernickus
Resource: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/07/110720085653.htm
Summary: Researchers have found that female Zebra Finches can lay more eggs due to the attractiveness of the male Finch. One of the researchers tried to manipulate the attractiveness and put colored rings around the male’s legs. This showed that it was really the mother’s perception of the male’s attraction. Material behavior can influence offspring in various ways and these types of behavior can help us find insight on evolutionary processes. 'We wanted to look at environmental cues that aren't as obvious as how much food the mother has -- like what role her psychology might play,' explains Dr Lucy Gilbert of the James Hutton Institute, lead author of the report published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. 'And we wanted to see how long these non-genetic effects might last down through the generations.' The test help to aim more on the mothers perception and they found that female Finches like the red ring around the leg more than the color green for the males. So they took 70 male Finches and put green and red rings around their legs and put them each with a female Finch. Once they laid eggs the people took all the clutches and put them with different parents. They did this to let the female can still react to the attractiveness of her mate. The next thing they did was got the daughters to mate with other male Finches by their choice and see how their eggs turned out according to how attractive their fathers were. It was proven that the daughters with attractive fathers produced more and heavier eggs then one with not attractive fathers.

Critique: This article was to me not very important but interesting. People don’t really care how attractive a bird is but if they help make more birds then that is a good thing.

Impact: The impact this has is that if people get more attractive Finches for the female Finches more Finches will be made so they don’t go extinct.

Boldness No More!

Resource: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/09/110901134641.htm
Summary: Yale students have recently found a source that triggers hair growth that may be helpful to baldness. Researchers have found that stem cells within the fatty lair showed that molecular signals were necessary to spur up hair growth in mice. "If we can get these fat cells in the skin to talk to the dormant stem cells at the base of hair follicles, we might be able to get hair to grow again," said Valerie Horsley, assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology and senior author of the paper. Men that are bald still have stem cells in follicles but lose the ability to start back up and grow hair. When the hair dies the fat layer of skin shrinks. When the hair starts to grow the skin expands and this is called adipogenesis. They found a stem cell that involved the creation of new fat cells which are called adipose precursor cells and they are what helped the mice’s hair grow. These cells also contain PDGF (platelet derived growth factors) and that is what helps human hair grow. Researchers are trying to figure out any other things that may trigger hair growth but for now they are trying to see if what they did to the mice might do something for human hair.

Critique: This article was good because it lets people know that hopefully there will be some help for people that can’t grow hair or are.

Impact: If what these people have found out works then that would be great for people that need or want to grow hair. People won’t have to wear wigs anymore and don’t need to go wasting their money on what they may think help their hair grow.

Protecting Your Hair

Written By: Samantha Bernickus
Summary: An atomic-force microscope reveals that conditioners don’t actually help your hair repair from all the damage that we do to our hair. People have found that conditioners don’t help because they don’t interact with your hair chemically. Bharat Bhushan is a mechanical engineer and has been looking at hair very closely and is finding out that conditioner does not help repair our hair. Even shampoo takes away natural oil that we need for our hair to be healthy and that is why we use conditioner. Our hair is also damaged by friction, friction is cause by us rubbing anything against our hair. It makes it split causing frizz and then it keeps getting worse and worse. So Bharat is trying to figure out what exactly we need to keep our hair healthy and under control but for now he is still figuring out how our hair grows and works.
Critique: This article is helpful because we now know that even if we buy the best of the best conditioner it doesn’t help any more than a $5 conditioner. And hopefully Bharat can help come up with a conditioner that can actually help repair our hair.
Impact: The impact this article has is that people can now realize that they don’t need to buy such expensive hair products and hopefully there will be a conditioner that comes out that will actually be worth buying.

Dinosaurs even bigger than previously thought

Written By: Samantha Bernickus
Resource: http://www.macroevolution.net/dinosaurs.html
Summary: It is pretty obvious that a dinosaur’s leg bone is connected to the hip bone but what isn’t very obvious is what’s in between the bones. Researchers have found that dinosaurs had many think layers of cartilage in their joints which means that they could have been taller than thought. Lawrence Witmer did research on ostriches and alligator and then he studied the fossilized limbs of other dinosaurs and he determined that the lengths of alligators and ostriches limbs include between 6 and 10% of cartilage. Another person that was researching on this was Holliday and he/she found that certain dinosaurs such as the Triceratops and Brachiosaurus may have been 10% or more taller then what we had originally thought. For example the Brachiosaurus was thought to be 42 feet tall but now thought to be a foot or more taller than that. Also all of this leads up to also knowing that the cartilage could make the dinosaur slower or faster, depending on the how it affects the skeleton.
Critique: What does this article have to do with anything, what is the point of knowing this? Otherwise it is pretty interesting.
Impact: I am not sure what the impact this has on people but it could possibly lead to other interesting studies of different animals or even people.

Can you drink heavy water?

Can you drink heavy water?

Summary- Can you drink heavy water? It may sound like normal water but it actually is different. Heavy water is like H20 but it is quit different. Heavy water is instead of H20 its Deuterium oxide. It is not drinkable. Heavy water is made out of deuterium instead of hydrogen. Its elemental structure is stronger than normal water. You can drink it but if you drink enough heavy water you will die because it contains a different molecular structure. You’re probably thinking that if we could switch our water in our body with deuterium oxide it would make us slightly stronger but in this case no. It will not change your strength in any significant way. If you were to add heavy water to normal water then you will simply dilutee it.

Critique- I think that it was interesting that there is different types of water then just plain H20. We can drink it but not a whole lot or we will die which is interesting that if you change a few things in H20 you will get deuterium oxide.

Impact- This Heavy water (deuterium oxide) can be used in nuclear technology and it can also make alcohol not make you lose brain cells so much (dilutes it).

Scorpion venom as a medicine?

Scorpion Venom as a medicine?

Summary- The benefits of scorpion venom are very minimal. The benefits can include temporarily soothing rheumatoid arthritis. It can also benefit inflammatory bowel diseases that can cause pain. The Poison can also treat or sooth multiple sclerosis which can also be helpful.

Critique- I think that everybody looks at scorpions as a scary or horrible creature but they are actually cool looking. I did not think that a type of poison could be used as a medicine. It kind of reminds me of a anti venom.

Impact- Making a poison into good things is a great idea but there are normally side effects with it though.

Is antimatter a new fuel source?

Is antimatter a new fuel source?

Summary- Antimatter is made when you get hydrogen atoms and you destroy them threw intense speeds which then creates antimatter and to hold or harness antimatter is simple. But the only use for antimatter is if we could put it in spaceships for an alternative fuel source. If scientists can harness this power it will cost allot of money. It will be Approximately 1 trillion dollars. And we could also use it for mining planets materials such as mars since antimatter hits matter and causes a explosion equivalent to 1 Hiroshima bomb. We can find more materials from different planets.

Critique- I think if we can get to this point we could make great discoveries since we have a very limited source right now. In the next 50 to 100 years we should be able to harness this power and use it to our advantage.

Impact- This technique is a good one but it can also backfire and people would use it as a warfare use.

What are black holes?

What are black holes?

Summary- The way a black hole is formed is when atoms of iron and calcium implode they will create a high amount of energy. This will then create a quasar. On the top and bottom of the quasar there will be gamma burst rays producing high amounts of energy. When a black hole goes near any type of matter it will swallow it into darkness. Scientists don’t exactly know what happens when you go into a black hole. But they do know that in the event horizon time is distorted and slower by approximately 6 to 7 seconds. If a human or creature goes into the event horizon it will go threw a process called spaghetified (sounds fake but it’s a real term). When this happens it will stretch your body out at great lengths and kill you. From somebody else’s person perspective from the outside of the event horizon they would see you fine and alive still. But to you, would under go pain unimaginable.

Critique- I personally think that black holes are kind of scary. If the world were to end I
would definitely prefer it to not end from a black hole. They might be scary but they are also interesting.

Impact- If scientists can do more studies about black holes and try to find out where they may lead to we could make amazing discoveries.

Sharks: Genocidal or Docile?

Summary: Here are some other marvelous things about sharks:
• They can’t swim backwards. Some fish can, but most sharks in general cannot. Most sharks would suffocate if they were dragged backwards by a speeding boat out for a joyride. It would be like a human sitting under a showerhead – on high, compacted power – for half an hour. You’d drown eventually.
• If a shark stops swimming, it will sink, not die. Contrary to common belief, sharks are actually filled with oxygen, so if they stop swimming, they can’t stay afloat. They sort of depend on staying active, because they need water running over their gills in order to receive oxygen from it. This means that they can’t stay asleep for more than a few minutes – unless they are already on the sea floor.
• Sharks can’t stop randomly like humans. They have to slow down. Think about it – imagine you are a shark. You’re going 20 mph. Now try stopping using your tailfin –oh, and you’re not allowed to swim backwards. What happened?
• The Big Question: Can sharks smell fear? Well, whoever spread that rumor was not only an idiot, but was wrong too. Oops on their part. Sharks are mostly bind. In fact, 2/3 of a shark’s brain is devoted to smell. They rely on their nose and use a type of echolocation to do their hunting. So, they will know if you’re coming, and if you’re causing a ruckus, but they won’t see you doing it. Oh the irony.
Impact (More like advice):Here’s a sticky situation: a shark is swimming towards you. “OMG, what now?!” Well, first, don’t panic. It will incline you to do something stupid like get in the way of the shark’s path. Most of the time, it will swim right past you. After all, what does it need to eat you for? Its last meal is probably still in its stomach. (Believe it or not, sharks can slow their digestive systems, so when they eat, they won’t have to do so again for a limit of 3 months!) And most sharks don’t even see you as a threat. I wouldn’t say they’re scared of you, per se, but I still wouldn’t get close to it unless you know what kind it is or how to deal with it. So if you come by a shark, go over the basic fundamentals of Stranger Danger: If you don’t know them, avoid them. If you see them approaching you, ignore them. Chances are, they will past by without a second glance. Long story short, don’t worry. Most of the time, they won’t hurt you. Most of the time.
Critique: Despite the impression the smash-hit Jaws gave about sharks being underwater serial killers, sharks are like snakes. They are falsely feared because of their potential to do something dangerous. Oh don’t worry, some will kill you on sight no matter what you do. But usually, snakes won’t bother you unless you start screaming, poking it with a rather large stick, calling your dog on it, or all of the above. So unless you want trouble, just be nice.

Is a new Element a possibility?

Is a new Element a possibility?

Summary- Chemistry officials have confirmed the creation of two new elements. So now names will be given to elements 114 and 116.They are not officially on the periodic table. They create these elements by taking a heavy element such as uranium. But in this case plutonium (94) and calcium (20) and accelerating the ion of calcium and intense speed letting it smash into the plutonium. Rarely these atoms fuse creating element 114. When you smash one of these at a target and let decay the element will change to different elements and you also will be able to measure the gamma rays that where detected. So in the near future there will be new periodic tables with elements 114 and 116.

Critique- I think that this experiment is a sign that we made great distance when it comes to science. If we can make elements we can a very vast list or table of elements in the next 50 years. Instead of the periodic table going only up 118 it will go up to 200 in 50 years from now.

Impact- The impact is if they did more studies on this to master this technique then there would be more elements to work with while doing chemistry. But if there are more elements then that means the harder science will be.

Ginormous black hole caught eating each other

Ginormous Black hole caught
Eating each other

Reference- http://news.yahoo.com/space-cannibal-ginormous-black-hole-caught-eating-another-171202812.html

Summary- A humungous black hole at the center of one galaxy is being devoured by a larger black hole than this one. At the center of virtually all galaxies there are a black hole. They are about 1 million times the mass of the sun. They are the closet supermassive black hole ever accord, according to NASA.

Critique- This is the largest black holes according to NASA. The force of these black holes are much greater than the sun bye a long shot. I also think it is amazing how there is a black hole in the center of the galaxy.

Impact- This just leads more astronomers and scientist to study more on this black hole. Also it will just lead them to thinking what else is out there like the many other discoveries they have made.

Impossible star defies
Astronomers Theories

Reference- http://news.yahoo.com/impossible-star-defies-astronomers-theories-171002834.html

Summary- A primordial star at the outer edge of the Milky Way Galaxy may change current theories of a star for the formation of the universe. The star name is SDS J102915+172927 say’s that this star has been around the universe since about at the beginning of time. The star is about 13 Billion years old it formed form the death of the first generation of stars. People believe that the universe itself is about approximately 13.7 Billion years old which would make this star very old.

Critique- I think that they don’t really have that much evidence that the universe or the star is around 13 billion years old. They look like they are just taking what they know or what they think they know and putting it together for forming a theory.

Impact- The impact is that if they put together more evidence more people will believe that this is true. Also they maybe able to study how old the universe really is.

Potatoes Doing Good Things In the Blood

Summary: People who happen to love potatoes will probably have the right to pat themselves on the back when they hear this. Potatoes actually have the ability to lower blood pressure, especially in the overweight. Now when a person is told that the potato is fattening and unhealthy, refer back to this and prove that wrong. Of course, only a few servings a day are actually efficent in lowering blood pressure. So eating more than that is just not good. However, this does not going to McDonalds three times a day and ordering a large fry is good. This research was done with a purple potato and this contained no oils and fats. In other words, it's safe to say that it's not exactly a delicous treat, considered it was also eaten with the skin on, unless of course people like that, but it is full of dozens of vitamins and phytochemicals. It isn't just the purple potato this can be done with, any potato without all that sour cream and butter, and especially not fried, can be a healthy, blood pressure lowering meal.

Critique: This could lower high blood pressure for people who need to, and may even be a cheap and effective alternative to regular blood pressure medicine. You could also be doing both taking blood pressure medication and eating the potatoes at the same time and get an even better result.

Impact: The purple potato can help obese and people with high blood pressure alike and can be a great asset to the world

Reasons not to get a lip/tongue piercing

Reference:http://www.biologynews.net/archives/2008/06/20/warning_for_teens_teeth_and_jewelry_dont_mix.html

Summary: An article explaining why lip and tongue piercing can increase problems in your teeth. A study shows that 15-20% of teens 18-19 with piercings in or around the mouth are in danger of getting gum disease or tooth fractures, which can lead to greater dental problems later on in the grand scheme of life. Parents are instructed to discourage lip/tongue piercings.

Critique: I don't know about you, but I can't stand the dentist's office. If I can avoid that place any way, I will! I think if other teens knew the risks these kinds of piercings have, they would quickly realize looking cool isn't worth having to visit your dentist more than twice a year.

Impact: If parents are pro-active, teens may re-think getting lip/tongue piercings, saving an extra trip to the dentists, and a bundle!

A Good Night's Sleep

Reference:http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/30/get-some-sleep-back-to-school-bedtimes/

Summary: This article is about how kids in school should get 10-12 hours of sleep every night. It also suggests kids shouldn't have electronics in their rooms because the light can wake them up. It talks about soda and that after lunchtime it should not be allowed to avoid insomnia. 2-3 hours before bedtime should not have strenuous exercize.

Critique: It's a good thought, but most families have a lot of activities and don't really have time to maintain everything the article suggests. Lets face it, Parents aren't miracle workers. They have things to do too, and their life cannot be focused around the fact it's recommend for their child to get at least 10 hours of sleep. Not to mention that these parents need to help their kids do homework.

Impact: Honestly, I don't think this will do much. People need more sleep, yes, but life doesn't wait for you to put your kid to bed at 8. It may work for some people, but a lot of people are very busy.
