Summary: Scientists have achieved what they have been researching for two decades. Using gene therapy, they have destroyed cancer tumors in three leukemia patients. Scientists genetically engineered the patients' own blood cells to annihilate the tumors. After the patients received the treatment, there was no change. Two weeks later they started having intense flu symptoms. About a year after the treatment, two of the patients are in remission and one has improved. However, scientists aren't sure how long the remission will last. They are now talking about spreading this treatment to other cancers such as pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, and brain cancer.
Critique: I think that this is absolutely amazing. This is very personal to me because I've had a few family members pass away from cancer. I believe it has the potential to be cancer's cure.
Impact: Every hour, about 150 people are diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Many lives can be saved using this therapy if it pans out. Individuals will be able to enjoy their lives and families won't be hurt.
