Leatherback turtle migration study identifies Pacific danger zones for endangered species

Resource: http://www.biologynews.net/archives/2012/03/01/leatherback_turtle_migration_study_identifies_pacific_danger_zones_for_endangered_species.html Summary: The Leatherback turtle is the biggest ocean turtle, it can get up to 6 feet long and they swim everywhere, but sadly are becoming endangered. "The study shows that leatherbacks can be found throughout the Pacific Ocean and identifies high-use areas that are of particular importance to their survival," said lead author Dr. Helen Bailey of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. "This information on their movements is essential for identifying hot spots and assessing where limiting fishing at particular times of year may be effective for protecting leatherbacks." They are the largest migrating turtles, and female turtles lay their eggs on tropical beaches and then leave to foraging areas to feed on jellyfish. They have been killed by fishers and the percentage of them has dropped 90%, therefore we need to make sure that we dont kill these animals. Impact: The Leatherback turtles do have an impact if they go extinct because they may be someones preditor and prey therefore they are leaving animals un eaten and others hungry for food, which is not good.
